Wednesday

Today we've been able to see Jack twice so far and he seems to be doing well. It's very difficult to see him in pain, though, so it's probably a good idea that they don't let us stay for more than 30 minutes. We will be able to go back again at 4:30 so we're back at the hotel eating lunch and relaxing - well, what little bit we are able to relax. Basically he is doing very well - everything other than his pain management is going just as the surgeon had planned which is such a blessing. They are giving him insulin right now so that his islet cells can "relax" before they start trying to work in his liver. His doctor is very hopeful that they 150,000 cells they put in will do all the work that his body will need. Of course we would be thrilled if he left the hospital taking no insulin, but I will just be happy if he is out of pain for now. Please, please pray for better pain management. I know they are doing all they can for him now, but it's very difficult to see him in pain. I just keep waiting to walk in and see him trying to hug the nurses...you know, Jack being himself. :-) They will probably be able to take out his nose tube by tomorrow and then move him out of ICU by tomorrow night. So, it will be nice to spend more time with him during the day! They will try to get him up out of the bed and sitting in a chair this afternoon, so I will report later on how that goes...it sounds terrifying.
